ESR 14 (Dublin, Ireland)

PhD Position: THz Imaging Systems: Modelling, Characterisation and Data Processing

The Photonics and Optical Engineering Group and The RF and Microwave Group are both led by members of The School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at University College Dublin (UCD). Our research within the scope here focuses on understanding, implementing and applying novel THz imaging technology using optical engineering principles. The project focuses on the modelling and characterization of such systems, and the development of appropriate image processing software for particular applications. Our research is directed towards the application of new THz technology so as to improve operational functionality.

CELTA Innovative Training Network – Research Objective

We are looking for a highly motivated (enthusiastic) and qualified PhD candidate with training/expertise in some of the following areas: Optical or THz imaging (digital holography, confocal microscopy, interferometry, speckle photography etc.). A solid engineering background in the areas of digital signal processing and in particular image processing would be useful. Familiarity and interest in topics such as super resolution, sub-pixel imaging and/or data compression would be of value. An interest in application of novel imaging techniques in areas such as biology and biomedical information processing would also be pertinent.

CELTA stands for “Convergence of Electronics and Photonics Technologies for Enabling Terahertz Applications” and comprises eleven leading research institutions and a comprehensive research training programme for all early-stage researchers (ESRs). It aims to produce the next generation of researchers who will enable Europe to take a leading role in the multidisciplinary area of making use of THz technology for applications involving systems for sensing, instrumentation, imaging, spectroscopy, and communications.

Expected Qualifications
The candidate should hold a Diploma, ME or MSc degree in Electronic, Optical Engineering or Physics, be able to write and present scientific results in English, and bring well-founded knowledge and experience in one or more of the following areas:
- Practical and theoretical background in optical imaging systems
- Digital information processing (software/hardware implementations)
- THz systems and devices

We expect excellent, independent research and commitment to cooperation with other scientific groups as well as publication of the research results in leading scientific journals.
The position will be funded for 3 years of full-time study at UCD, Dublin, Ireland. The researcher will attend CELTA network meetings and training events throughout Europe and will cooperate closely with our research partners. The selected ESR will be expected to spend up to 5 months at The Goethe Leibniz Terahertz Center which is part of the Physics Institute at the Goethe University Frankfurt am Main and has close cooperation with the Ferdinand-Braun-Institut, Berlin, Germany. It is intended that via our collaborators the ESR will have access to THz instrumentation and imaging data.

Application formalities
Due to the mobility requirement of the European Commission for ITN projects, we can only accept PhD candidates that have not been working/living in Ireland for more than 12 months within the last 3 years. The candidate must have finished the (first) master/diploma program not more than four years ago.

Your application should include your curriculum vitae, ME/MSc/Diploma certificates and grades, and a letter of motivation stating your interest in the position. UCD intends to increase the number of female researchers and encourages female candidates to apply. In case of equal qualifications, applicants with a degree of disability of at least 50 or equal will be given preference. Wages and salaries are according to the collective agreements on salary scales, which apply to the European International Projects.
